Plano, Texas- When the final buzzer sounded, the Plano Wildcats were able to celebrate their unusual path to the Championship of the 2010 Avery Air Invitational Basketball Tournament. The 57-40 victory was even more impressive as the Wildcats delivered the knockout to the McKinney Lions without leading scorer Rashad Smith. Smith had badly injured an ankle the previous day in the early stages of a close victory over Highland Park. The Wildcats rallied around Head Coach Phil Parlin and used a swarming defense and balanced scoring attack to keep the impressive Avery Air Championship trophy on campus. MVP Daniel Slaughter, tournament MVP, and his teammate Julian Okoro gave the injury depleted Wildcats the scoring and rebounding necessary to distance themselves from McKinney. Wes Watson, Head Coach of the Lions, had watched his team light up the scoreboard in previous games of the tournament but the Championship Game would be a much different story. A seven point first half and fifteen point deficit would be too much to overcome. However, Hunter Edwards played brilliantly and was the tournament's leading scorer. Your final. .. Plano Wildcats 57 McKinney Lions 40.
